Background

South Africa has an illustrious history of hosting international motorsport. It began in 1934 with what is regarded as the country’s first Grand Prix. The race – held at the Prince George Race Circuit in East London – played to a live audience estimated to be in excess of 70 000 people.

Throughout the 1930s and again over three decades from the 1960s until 1994, South Africa hosted many Formula One World Championship events supported by its own local Formula One series too.

Additionally, South Africa held the annual Kyalami 9 Hour race during the 1960s and 1970s. Part of the Endurance Racing World Championship the 9 Hour became a legendary race for Prototype, GT and Sports Racing Cars amongst the so-called Springbok Series that became a summer playground for international motorsport in the off-season. Together with the GPs, impressive circuits and fine weather entrenched South Africa as a global motorsport destination.

It is only fitting then that this heritage is celebrated with events that recall past eras. Speedstream Events have identified this need by organising a series of spectacular historic motoring experiences. First among these is the South African Historic Grand Prix Festival, taking place in November/December 2018, and celebrating South Africa’s pre-war motorsport history. GT Classic will follow as an annual event from 2019.

Catering for road legal Sports and Sports Racing Cars built between 1950 and 1975, GT Classic promises to be an epic international adventure spanning nearly 3 000km and five race tracks in eight days, in a part-race, part-Time Trial, part-tour style event across spectacular South Africa.
